Wayne County Jail Roster

The Wayne County, North Carolina Jail Roster is a public resource that allows you to find out who is currently in custody at the county jail. WayneCourt.us provides access to public information about current and recently released inmates. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office also maintains its own online search system — Inmate Inquiry. Additionally, information can be obtained in person at the jail, by phone, or through a public records request. The roster is maintained by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and is regularly updated to reflect the current inmate population.

Find Wayne Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a person is officially admitted to the jail. It is the first document that records the fact of detention.

During the booking process, the following data is generated:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • List of charges at the time of arrest
  • Name of the arresting agency (sheriff, Goldsboro police, etc.)
  • Photograph and biometric data

Most of this information is available through the sheriff's online search system as long as the person remains in custody. Once released, the record usually disappears from the public roster.

If you need an archived booking record, submit a written public records request directly to the sheriff's office. To search for individuals serving sentences in state prisons, use the North Carolina Department of Corrections search system — it only covers state-level convicts and does not include county jail data.

Search the Wayne Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The search system on the sheriff's website supports two main methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the last name in full. Adding the first name is optional but will narrow the results if the last name is common — for example, Smith or Jones. The system is not case-sensitive.

Search by Booking Number

The booking number is the most accurate way to find a specific person. It is assigned during admission and is unique for each detention case.

Practical Tips

  • Check spelling: one mistake in the last name and the system will find nothing.
  • Try spelling variations if the last name can have multiple forms (e.g., MacDonald / McDonald).
  • If there are no results, it may mean the person has been released, transferred to another facility, or the booking process has not yet been completed.
  • Contact the jail by phone if the online search yields no results — an operator will check the data manually.

For court records related to the case, visit the court records obtaining page or contact the Wayne County court clerk's office.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Wayne

The inmate roster is updated regularly throughout the day, but it does not happen instantly. There may be a delay of several hours between the actual arrest and the appearance of the record in the online system — the time needed to complete the booking process, enter data, and verify information.

Main Limitations

LimitationExplanation
Delay after arrestThe record appears only after the booking is fully processed, which can take from 1 to several hours.
Disappearance after releaseWhen a person is released, their record is removed from the public roster — usually within the same day.
Only current detaineesThe roster is not an archive. It only shows those who are in custody at the time of the search.
TransfersIf a person is transferred to a state facility, their record will disappear from the county roster. Search through the DAC search system.
JuvenilesRecords of individuals under 18 are not published.

The roster is a snapshot of the current state, not a complete history. For archived data on past bookings, submit a request directly to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Court records, including decisions and case materials, are kept by the court clerk's office, which operates from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM on business days.
